Got To Re-Do Step 2
Having done the fibreglassing (FG) some two weeks ago (even though I only wrote it up on the 27th) it all went pear shaped.
I spoke to Scott (who is in possession of the FG) yesterday, hoping to hear some good news. Unfortunately none was forthcoming. The FG resin didn’t dry properly and is now just a squishy mess. This, obviously, means that I will have to re-do it. Such a shame! Having taken some advice from others, it would seem that the hardener we used was the culprit for the failure. So, this time things will be a little different.
This time I will use proper Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) rather than the tissue mat. It is much thicker and giving it 4 layers (again) will ensure stiffness for the back board.
I will also use proper FG resin hardener rather than that plastic padding hardener we used last time.
Of course, re-doing the FG means that I can do it on my own car rather than Scott’s which will always be in my possession.
So, I need to purchase:
Chopped Strand Mat. (eBay link) This is two square metres which should be enough to do both pods (complete).
Hardener. I have some resin left over but no hardener. I know you can buy the hardener itself at Halfords* (although there was none in stock when I looked), but I am tempted just to buy more resin and hardener as a kit.
By the time I have purchased that lot, there are complete kits at Halfords with everything I need. I don’t however, know how much they are!
I have lots of paint brushes left so I don’t need them but I would really like a roller to work air bubble out from between the layers of FG.
While I’m here, I have a question for anyone that might be reading:
What can I use to clean brushes and or the roller once I have finished a section? I am sure there must be something as the rollers are £5+ each.
* Don’t bother looking at the Halfords website, it sucks.
